This is long overdue, but I wanted to start our blog by
letting everyone know exactly what it is we’re doing in Rwanda.
Emily and I are committed to 2 years of teaching at a
Christian school in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. Our school is called Kigali International
Community School, or KICS. Our student
population is about one-third American, one-third Rwandan, and one-third from other
nationalities.
KICS is an accredited, American-based school, which is very
rare to find in Rwanda. We make it
possible for American missionaries and NGO workers with families to stay long
term in Kigali. Students from other
countries benefit from having the background necessary to apply to American
universities, if they so choose.
Emily is teaching middle-school science, Biology, and 10th
grade English. I teach 7th
grade math and two sections of Algebra.
In addition, I work part time as the network administrator and handle
general IT support. During the spring semester, I’ll also be
coaching high school basketball.
In return for teaching at the school, KICS pays the rent at
our house, provides airfare to and from America over the summer, and also
provides for some expenses, such as basic health care. However, we do not earn a salary. We have had to raise funds for our monthly
expenses, most of which are groceries, transport and some utilities.
We love it here in Rwanda.
The community here is very welcoming, and has been a tremendous blessing
to us. It’s very different for us to
live near and go to church with our fellow coworkers, our students, and their parents. We even host a weekly Bible study in our
house that one of Emily’s students attends (along with her mother).
We have many stories and pictures to share, and will be
doing so through this blog in the near future.
In the meantime, questions and comments are always welcome. We're loving our adventure here, and hope you feel
like you’re a part of it too.
Chuck and Emily: keep up the good work and keep on reporting your activities and accomplishments, goals, needs and local information. Love, Dad by law and Dad -in-law.
